Le jeune berger Fiorin Serafino a toujours vécu libre sur sa montagne avec ses moutons. Il doit se rendre à Rome pour son service militaire, mais il est renvoyé dans son village pour «déficience mentale», où il découvre que sa jeune cousine Lidia a rudement embelli en quelques mois...
